Annadana is a NGO non-funded by government of 12 years since established on 2000. They offers a wide range of organic open pollinated seed of all shapes, tastes and colours to distribute to gardener and farmers.This farm do preservation of heirloom seed,  in the mean to conserving diversity of vegetable food plants to support sustainable natural farming.

Conventional farm use a series of technique introduced by chemical corporate, start from treated seeds, to pesticide, herbicide, fungicide, synthetic fertilizer etc, resulting into acidic and compacted deadly soil and thus cause a lots of livelihood, food security, healthy and environment issues. Untreated seed, require less water, more resilience toward pest and disease.

 

 

What we eat daily is determine by seed/chemical/food trading company, only the species that can withstand pesticide/herbacide/fungicide, machines plucking, long shipping, high yield that is fulfill market value will be selected by seed company whereas the others was eliminated. we just have selection of few types of tomatoes in the market but in fact there is more than hundred types of tomotoes in the world.

In this 2 days workshop, we was shown the ways to preserves the heirloom seeds. It is not an easy jobs to do the preservation as a lots a heirloom seeds already given up by the farmers and there is always a treat of cross pollination between hybrid/genetic modified seeds with heirloom seeds. They would have to start with search of heirloom seeds, follow by a lots of research on it, then they have to grow it to keep the next generation. Beside that they have to do the awareness program to the government and public. There is a lots to learn from her ways to organise the organization and also the activities.

There is a wonderful sharing by the Ms. Sangitha, about how she is enlighten to get into this field. It is when she started to ask why she have to eat a lots of chemical and it led her to more and more question to think and to solve. Her passion is all about the healthy soil, diverse untreated seed and dignity of the farmers.

We also learned about ways to make compost, ways to manage the soil fertility, ways to control the pests.

Annadana basically is a NGO do preservation of heirloom seed, in the mean to conserving diversity of vegetable food plants to support sustainable natural farming. Conventional farming is a package of technique start from treated seeds, to pesticide, herbicide, fungicide, synthetic fertilizer etc, resulting into acidic and compacted deadly soil, polluted river by excessive of water-soluble nitrogen, low water table, climate change etc. We pay with our declining health, low food security, haphazard environment and lost of biodiversity to the so-called incredible ‘Green Revolution”.

Members of Selangor Farmers Association, a retired conventional farmer, a conventional farmer before and current organic farmer, and a freelance agriculture writer, both have seen the haphazard cause by chemical, but if we would have to change the mindset of the conventional farmers and consumers, there is a lots effort to go.

Dishes in our plate is getting dull and sense of our tongue is getting insensitive. I was so impressed by the different kind of heirloom tomatoes available here, different colour of tomatoes of red, pink, yellow and orange;different shapes of it, and different tastes of each. It is a wonderful yet weird when you are eating something that is familiar for us which is tomatoes but the tomatoes is very different with what we used to see and eat. We lost the right to choose and we not even know that we are losing a lots of things, our taste, health, environment etc.
I like the pink tomato, alien pink colour tomato, small tiny cute, taste sweet with a little bit of sour come later.

When the soil get the right treatment, the farmers get the dignity, then everything will go in the right path.
